What WhatsApp Stores on an iPhone

WhatsApp is often where the substance of a matter lives, because it carries the conversations people treat as private. On an iPhone the app keeps its record in a SQLite database with its shared media alongside it, a structure that makes it a rich forensic artifact. Sherlock Forensics iPhone Analyzer reconstructs the full surface into dedicated views: one-to-one and group messages with timestamps, voice and video call records, shared media such as photos, videos, audio notes and documents, contacts and group membership. Each view is searchable and exports to CSV or JSON.

The value is not only the messages. Group membership shows who was in a conversation and when they joined or left, which often matters as much as what was said. Call records place a voice or video contact at a specific minute. Shared media ties a photo or a document to the chat that moved it, so an image is read in the context that sent it rather than as a loose file. Every WhatsApp record also feeds the merged Activity Timeline and global search, so a message reads in sequence with calls, locations and other app activity from the same window. A search for a name or a number pulls every WhatsApp reference across the whole device at once.

Reachable From a Backup or an Extraction

WhatsApp is one of the apps carried inside an encrypted iPhone backup, so its chat database and shared media do not require a full-filesystem extraction to reach. Sherlock reads the WhatsApp record from a backup you make over USB from a device you can unlock and Trust, from an existing iTunes or Finder backup or from a Cellebrite UFED or VeraKey full-filesystem extraction. Whichever way the evidence arrived, the chat record is available, which makes WhatsApp one of the more accessible high-value artifacts in an iPhone case.

A full-filesystem extraction adds surrounding depth that a logical backup does not carry, the behavioral and system artifacts that live outside an app's own container. That depth is a separate benefit. The WhatsApp chat record itself, the messages, the calls and the shared media, comes through in a backup in full, so a reviewer does not need enterprise acquisition tooling to work it.

What Deleted WhatsApp Messages Survive

Deleting a chat is one of the first things a subject does, so what survives that deletion is frequently the decisive question. The honest answer is the same physics that governs every SQLite artifact. When a WhatsApp message is deleted, iOS marks the record's database page as free rather than erasing it on the spot. Until the database writes new data over that page the deleted entry is still physically present, so Sherlock carves those records back out through standard freed-page carving.

What survives therefore depends on time and device use after the deletion. A chat cleared shortly before acquisition on a lightly used phone is often recoverable; a chat cleared weeks ago on a heavily used device has usually been overwritten and no tool brings it back. Sherlock flags every carved message as recovered in the interface and the report, so an examiner can state on the record which messages were live and which were carved and can explain the survival logic without overclaiming. This is the same freed-page methodology every credible tool works under; the value is honest labeling, not a promised recovery number.

The Honest Limit

On-Device Evidence, Not the Cloud

A credible WhatsApp page has to be clear about where the evidence comes from. Sherlock reads the WhatsApp record that the acquired evidence carries, the on-device database and media held in a backup or an extraction. It does not pull chats from WhatsApp servers, does not reach a separate cloud backup account through a provider and does not intercept live messages. It analyzes evidence you already hold, which is what an examiner can lawfully work and defend.

That boundary is also what keeps the analysis honest end to end. The chats that reach the review are the chats the device kept, whether live or carved from freed pages, never a reconstruction invented from outside the evidence. An examiner works the on-device record for what it is and lets corroboration across artifacts, the call log, the timeline and the shared media, build the picture rather than overreach within one source.

Message evidence draws scrutiny because it speaks directly to intent and knowledge, so the documentation is built for it: the court-ready HTML report carries case and evidence numbers, examiner identification, disclosed methodology, per-artifact SHA-256 hashing and an optional evidence-integrity manifest, with recovered messages flagged throughout, the documentation elements described in NIST Special Publication 800-101 Revision 1, Guidelines on Mobile Device Forensics. Sherlock reads the WhatsApp record from evidence you can lawfully acquire: a device you can unlock, an existing backup or a full-filesystem extraction produced by acquisition tooling. It does not unlock a locked device, does not bypass a passcode and does not reach WhatsApp servers or a cloud backup account through a provider. Messages a subject deleted long enough ago to be overwritten are gone. Sherlock reports what the acquired evidence carries and flags what it recovered, which is what an examiner can defend on the stand.
